Voting Rights

Tuesday, 6/1 7pm
Register at bit.ly/FreedomToVote_TownHall

Folds attended this town hall panel discussion to consider actions and legislation to expand and ensure democracy for all. Panelists included Charles Douglas, III with Common Purpose, Cindy Black with Fix Democracy First, and our own Lisa Ornstein with Olympia Indivisible.

We had until August to pass the For the People Act in order to protect our elections. Senators must put our democracy first and end the Jim Crow filibuster. Let's get every Washington Indivisible group to join groups nationwide in taking action every Friday. Details on emailing, calling and digital media for #FilibusterFriday are HERE.

During the Indivisible Town Hall with Maria Cantwell, the Senator moved a smidge from "I support a talking filibuster" to maybe she would consider a democracy carve out if it could save voting rights in states like Georgia. She needs to do better than that. Let's keep the pressure up by participating in #FilibusterFriday this and every Friday and get your members involved! Details HERE.

Senate Call-A-Palooza
Call-A-Palooza lasted 5 days — you can sign up for a single day & time, or be a superhero and call on 2 or more days.
Here's how it worked: You sign up to make 2 telephone calls within your 30 minute time window (one each to Senator Murray & Senator Cantwell's Washington D.C. office.) Your total time commitment was 5-10 minutes each day.
We sent you everything you needed by email the night before your calls, and by text message on the day of your calls. (That's why we asked for a cell phone number.) If you had signed up for more than one day, you looked for an email and text message from us for each of those days.
Pro tips:
  1. Check your email or text messages for last minute updates before your call time: we expect the Senate to vote on S1 later in the week, we will be adapting the daily call scripts as events unfold.
  2. Be sure to mention what organization you are with (Indivisible group name, WA Poor Peoples' Campaign, church, etc), and ask your call taker to include it in their message.
Our goal ws to start strong on Monday and build up to a constantly ringing phone line in Senator Murray and Senator Cantwell's office by Thursday and Friday. Our Senators need to know that the entire state is demanding they do everything in their power to ensure S1 gets passed in time to make a difference in the 2021 and 2022 elections. It's not enough to support the For the People Act: we need them to be fiercely, publicly advocating for eliminating anything that is keeping the bill from being passed.
Extra karma points for doubling your effort by getting at least one friend to sign up as well.
